What is a Doudou?Doudou in colloquial French refers to anything that acts as a "security blanket". It literally means "soft-soft". Doudous are hugely popular in mainland Europe and especially France (their country of origin), however, they are becoming more and more popular in the UK. Psychologists say that babies develop an attachment to a soft toy (a "transitional object") at around the age of eight months. It serves to reassure the child because it acts as a link between the security of home and the strangeness of the outside world. We often have requests from French customers looking for a specific doudou to replace a lost one. Sometimes people order two at once in case one gets lost - at first we contacted customers to double check that they hadn't ordered two of the same type by mistake - that's how we found out! There is also a French website dedicated to appeals from parents with children who have lost their Doudous (www.sosdoudous.com). |
